The hike up the Gamsberg continues...
This is the top of the Gamsberg. It's actually not as flat as I expected; I was imagining a southwestern mesa, which tends to look like someone scraped it off with a razor. This looks a lot like the terrain down below; like someone just pushed a chunk of the plain up from underneath.
Some pretty flowers.
Another view of the top. There's a solar power cell phone tower here. Dieter said he got better reception than he gets in Heidelberg!
A small palm in the sand.
There's an abandoned research station up here, because it was just too hard to get up here. So now it looks like a little ghost town.
So we stopped to have lunch. I think it was about 1 pm at this point.
Eli and I walked over near the edge to get a view out over the plains. Here you can see the sharp edge of the mountaintop.
And here's the view just to the right of the previous shot.
And here's us making our way back to the cell tower.
These are the solar cells that power the tower.
Here's the road leading from the ghost town to the top of the trail.
Here's the view from the top of the trail looking back down.
This is the view about 180 degrees from the previous picture.
This is our path winding back down the mountain.
Here's the gorgeous vista, spoiled by the heavy cloud cover. :-) Actually, this is the biggest cloud I've seen here so far.
An interesting rock.
The view part way down.
A Namibian traffic jam. These are actually the owners of the farm, presumably going to check on their cattle. You can see one of their dogs perched on the hood of their car. We pulled off the road to let them pass.
These two pictures show the startlingly white quartz rocks you would sometime see clustered in the general red surroundings.
Near the farmhouse, we saw a herd of sheep. Later on, we startled a large pack of meercats, who ran away with their tails straight up. Too fast for me to get a photo, alas.
Here you can see the steep fall-off to the left, and the roughness of the one-lane road. It was an adventure. :-)
Once back on the main road, we also saw a couple of strange rodents that looked like squirrels except with racoon tails. This morning, while driving to the site, I was looking for the herd of springbok, and instead saw a herd (flock?) of ostriches! Unfortunately, my camera was in the control center, and I couldn't take any pictures. Maybe they'll be back tomorrow.
