Now begins our trip through the Namib desert.
Here we are heading up into the Gamsberg pass.
A couple shots of the landscape as we head through the pass.
Here's the Gamsberg from the other side.
Some more random shots of beautiful mountains.
Now we're starting to come down out of the mountains. You can start to see how the landscape is getting drier and yellower.
Now we're starting to head into the Kuiseb Canyon region. You can see how different it looks than on the other side of the Gamsberg. No green shrubs and trees to see here.
This is part of the Kuiseb pass.
We stopped here to stretch our legs, and there was a stunning view over the canyon. This is a panorama view.
The next few pictures are all from roughly the same spot, just looking in different directions. Later I talk about looking back and taking a picture of this spot.
Turning away from the canyon, you can see how flat and empty the landscape is (it'll get even more empty before the day is out).
Here's Eli, looking out over the canyon.
We found an interesting-looking trail and decided to hike for a bit. It wove around cliffs like this with rock falls and sheltered overhangs.
Here's Eli, a bit ahead of me.
Somewhere in this region, maybe even here, a couple of Germans who wanted to avoid the war fled out into the desert and lived here for almost three years. One of them wrote a book, "The Sheltering Desert", which I bought in Windhoek and am currently reading.
A beautiful rock fall.
The next three shots are of the area around the rock fall.
The trail took us through some really interesting rock formations that we had squeeze around.
Another shot of Eli, looking out over the canyon.
Looking back over the canyon to the Gamsberg.
Looking back from our hiking trail to where we first stopped to look out over the canyon.
Back on the road, the desert is starting to get really empty.
