So, today I took a shuttle bus from Cairns up to Port Douglas. This is a view back towards Cairns from a lookout point along the way. At first I thought the smoke was from burning sugar cane fields, like in Hawaii. There is a lot of cane growing in this area; its the primary crop, but apparently they don't burn it anymore. Those are bush fires.
A view to the left from the same spot, looking out east over the Pacific.
This is right next to the hostel where Im staying. These warning signs were on every river and creek, just about. And for good reason!
This is a panoramic 180-degree view of four-mile beach. The beach was so amazingly long, that even though there were tons of people on it, they could spread out so much that you really felt like you had it mostly to yourself.
Another view of four-mile beach.
A coconut.
This is the hostel where I'm staying. The footbridge goes over the pool back to where the rooms are. To the right is a bar and small restaurant, and beyond that is the reception area. My room is actually just to the right of the pool, but because of the way they built the fences, I have to walk all the way to the back of the facility, go right, and then walk all the way back. :-)
